WHO is concerned about the rise in coronavirus cases in several countries ahead of the coming winter. The organization is appealing for further testing.

Austrians relaxed about Corona in the fall.
Among those countries that informed the World Health Organization (WHO), hospital admissions and treatment for Corona in intensive care units have increased, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Thursday in Geneva. He cited the Americas and Europe.

He said the proportion of vaccinated people in high-risk groups is worryingly low. “Covid-19 may not be as acute a crisis as it was two years ago, but that doesn’t mean we can ignore the disease,” Tedros said. The circulating variants do not trigger more severe disease than previously known ones, according to studies to date, said Covid-19 specialist Maria Van Kerkhove.

She called on governments to continue testing so that the spread of variants can be monitored. She stressed that known protective measures against infection are still effective and should be used, including ventilating rooms, disinfecting hands, wearing masks in crowded spaces and getting vaccinated.
